EEG-based Research on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

The main objective of this research is to investigate and categorize social and emotional learning (SEL) motivations behind problem-solving, using the metrics introduced in Elliott et al.'s (2018) study on SEL. By utilizing an electroencephalogram (EEG) wearable device along with video processing techniques, we measured the brain activity of participants during problem-solving tasks. The Mind Monitor application was employed to extract and analyze meaningful insights from the EEG signals. During the experiment, participants solved problems while wearing EEG headsets, with their problem-solving process also being recorded for further analysis. Machine learning algorithms were then developed to categorize the participants' social and emotional motivations. The dataset, consisting of EEG readings and processed video recordings, was split into an 80/20 ratio for testing and validation purposes. The goal is to leverage this classification algorithm to predict individuals’ SEL motivations in problem-solving contexts.
