Tips for getting Pixar's USD working?

Hi, this is not really an issue with kaolin, but I figure you must have run into this issue yourself. At the moment the official USD install instructions results in a non-functioning USD install on macos under any realistic scenario (already using conda/mamba environment manager e.g.). Would you know how to get it working by any chance (do you perhaps use a modified build script internally or something)?
