This is a data pack + resource pack that aims to improve Minecraft's progression by inserting a new challenge between each tier of tools. This makes Minecraft way less linear and therefore more interesting. My goal was also to preserve the core aspect of Minecraft, so the changes are small and few, but impactful. Specifically this data- and resource pack will:
- Replace Stone Pickaxes with Bone Pickaxes, which are made from Bone Blocks,
- Make Diamond Ores drop Rough Diamonds (a new item),
- Add a recipe for polishing Rough Diamonds into Diamonds using Magma Cream,
- Adjust loot tables, such that iron and diamonds are more rare,
- Allow iron pickaxes to mine obsidian and crying obsidian,
- Slightly increase the amount of leather dropped by cows
I recommend playing on hard difficulty optimal survival experience.

- Open Minecraft.
- Begin creating a new world and click on "Data Packs".
- Drag the Missing Gatekeepers Data Pack folder into the Minecraft window.
- Click "Yes" on the confirmation screen.
- Move the data pack to the right hand side of the screen by clicking the triangle on its icon.
- Click "Done" and continue creating your world, then click on "Create New World".
- In Minecraft, click on "Options", then "Resource Packs".
- Choose "Open resource pack folder".
- Put the Missing Gatekeepers Resource Pack folder into the resource folder in Minecraft.
- Go back to Minecraft, the resource pack should now be listed. Move the data pack to the right hand side of the screen by clicking the triangle on its icon. Make sure that it is above default minecraft.
- Click "Done" and Minecraft will automatically reload the resources.
