Rendering in 3D mode is not fully optimised. While creating IBO in viewSector3D.cpp, terrain could be divided into bigger chuncks then two triangles (as one quad) per draw call.

Lines: 138 to 144.

This issue is marked as wontfix, as it will not be changed by me. If you wish to have bigger performance by dividing terrain into bigger chunks, feel free to fork project and change it yourself.
