Project Overview

The Colorado Board of Elections has given us the task of completing an election audit for a recent local congressional election. For this project we:

  1. Calcuated the total number of votes cast.
  2. Compiled a complete lsit of candidates who received votes.
  3. Calcuated the total number of votes each candidate recieved.
  4. Calculated the percentage of votes each candidate won.
  5. Determine the winner of the election based on popualr vote.

  • Data Source: election_results.csv
  • Software: Python 3.8.3, Visual Studio Code 1.45.1

Summary

The analysis of the election shows that:

  • There were 369,711 votes cast in the election.

  • The candidates were:

    • Charles Casper Stockham
    • Diana DeGette
    • Raymon Anthony Doane
  • The candidate results were:

    • Charles Casper Stockham received 85,213 votes (23% of votes cast).
    • Diana DeGette received 272,892 votes (73.8% of votes cast).
    • Raymon Anthony Doane received 11,606 votes (3.1% of votes cast).
  • The winner of the election was:

    • Diana DeGette who received 73.8% of votes cast (272,892 votes).

Challenge Overview

In addition to the above analysis, the challenge asks us to find:

  1. The number of votes from each county
  2. The percentage of votes from each county
  3. The county that had the highest voter turnout

Challenge Summary

The additional analysis shows that:

  • Jefferson county represented 10.5% of the votes (38,855 votes)
  • Denver county represented 82.8% of the votes (306,055 votes)
  • Arapahoe county represented 6.7% of the votes (24,801 votes)
  • The county that had the highest voter turnout was Denver
