For the beta testers of Paper Mario: Beyond the Dream

X4X5 here, and this is recorded documentation on how to configure the mod correctly to be able to properly beta test Beyond the Dream. I might update this site in the future to document other things, whenever nessecary, who knows. But I've been needing ti do this for a while, so I can't really hold off doing this anymore, so let's get started

How to set up Beyond the Dream with the Star Rod debug menu

(Please note that this tutorial will assume you have mapped your d-pad, L, and R buttons. If you are testing on console, you do not need to worry about this)

  1. Press d-pad left. This will open the Star Rod debug menu for you.
  2. Using d-pad up or down, scroll all the way to "Set Story Byte." This basically changes what point in the story you are.
  3. For this tutorial, we'll only be adding Luna. In this case, set the story byte to "9C" and press R to select. Now the game thinks that you just made it to Merlon back in Toad Town, and you spoke to him about the "Dark Toads," thereby revealing the Koopa Bros.
  4. Press "L" until you get back to the main menu. Scroll then all the way to "Edit partners"
  5. "Press "R" to select, and scroll using d-pad left and right to set Luna to the desired level. Press R to select, the L until you're completely out of the menu.
  6. At this point, use the partner menu to select your partner, and Luna should be with Mario now!

Help! Project64 crashed on me when I tried to start the mod!

  1. Go to the Options menu in PJ64, then choose Settings. Make sure the Hide advanced settings checkbox is turned off.
  2. Right-click on the rom in the rom list, and choose Edit Game Settings.
  3. In the game settings dialog, select Recompiler in the list on the left side, then make sure the Register caching checkbox is off.
  4. The rom should now run fine. Enjoy the game!
