Inspiration
Online communication is a rapidly growing sector for the work - with some countries quintupling users every 5 years. With such a large user base, it is imperative to ensure a comfortable and inclusive environment for different cultures, and people with accessibility needs. Unfortunately, social media inclusivity is not growing nearly as rapidly as online communication. This causes a few groups, especially those with partially or completely impaired vision to not be as connected with the trends and events of today's social media.
Loosely based on
What it does
MetaPost hopes to improve communication for users of different accessibility levels, particularly those who are partially or completely blind. This app will empower users with accessibility needs to connect with family and loved ones in an every increasingly connected world.
How we built it
The front end was made with React and Axios for the REST requests and then backend was made using express. In addition we made use to the Facebook (now Meta) and Azure (Computer vision) APIs
Challenges we ran into
Other than being very difficult to meet up with our busy schedules, setting up the API calls was the most time consuming. In addition, the front end required a lot of finessing to get right
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Making a clean and good looking frontend was difficult was reward to see once everything is in place
What we learned
We learnt how to work under pressure and as a group. Since we were all very busy throughout the hackathon, it was difficult to coordinate everything. Using GitHub boards (beta) we clearly organized everything into sprints and neatly did all the tasks and assigned to the right people
What's next for MetaPost
We are planning to include features like video captioning for supporting video for those with auditory impairment. Furthermore, we are also planning to make the app more robust in terms like allowing users to sign in and stay signed in.
