List of Public Blogs of Hacker News users

Primary LanguageGoMIT LicenseMIT

Description

This is a collection of personal blogs from the Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here? thread on Hacker News, prepared as OPML for easy import into your favorite RSS reader.

Usage

Download list.opml and import it into your favorite RSS reader.

There is an alternative list as well, blogs that were added after submission to the HN post - listx.opml.

When building this list, I have ignored any user with less or equal to 1 karma, which means I might have missed some interesting blogs, but at the same time I wanted to ignore spam or throwaway accounts.

The list is sorted by the user karma on Hacker News, so the first blogs are from users with the highest karma.

You can modify the list in your editor to include only the top 10 or 100 blogs, or to remove some blogs you are not interested in.

Not from all comments I was able to extract a blog URL, so the list is not complete. I just parse the correct recocognized URLs from comments.

Not all blogs have RSS feeds, or the RSS feeds aren't included in the <link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="..."> or <link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" href="..."> tag, so I might have missed some blogs.

Anyway, we got more than 1100 blogs, so I think it is a good start.

You can find the output of the latest run at console.log.

Content of the blogs

I have not reviewed the content of the blogs, so I do not know if they are good or bad, or if they are safe for work. I do not know the languages of those blogs, so I do not know if they are in English or not. The best way to find out is to visit the blog and see if you like it or not.

Regenerate list

As easy as running:

go run ./main.go | tee > console.log

It is going to take a while, as it needs to fetch the karma for each user, and then fetch the RSS feed for each blog.

Contributing

Add your blog manually to the listx.opml file.

Please do not add blogs directly to the list.opml file, as it is going to be overwritten.

Originally, submissions were made as comments in a HN thread but this has since been closed.

Don't see your blog in the list?

  1. Make sure your comment does show a valid URL link to your blog. A lot of times people will type example.com or HTtp://example.com and it won't be recognized as a link.
  2. Make sure your blog has an RSS feed. And your website has an alternate link to the RSS feed in the <head> section of the HTML. For example:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="XXX" href="https://example.com/rss.xml">
  1. Only users with more than 1 karma are included.
