log-normal distribution of weights?

Might it be better to model the weights of events in a matrix bin as log-normal distributed, rather than normal distributed?

No... The weight of each event is probably drawn from a log-normal distribution, but the average weight we are modelling here is the sum of many single weights, so it should be normally distributed.
