This is a pretty big homework. It will probably benefit you to work alongside someone else.
Create a basic version or Hacker News or Reddit in Rails. Use Devise for basic user login, and so you can attribute posts and comments to users.
Its up to you to spec out what you need to do here. But make the interactions use Ajax as needed.
