To reproduce do:

No background:

I had changed this at the last minute, It did have a background on it, but it doesn't fill up the full space and looks funky.

Agreed that the background makes it look terrible, but ideally it should be a font that looks good and is readable across all three background colors.

I need to find a way to change the colors for these messages (ErrorMsg and WarningMsg) across the different status line colors. It is not clear if that is possible or not.

Or you could find a better broken background color that the error color will display better against. You can't script the highlights to use different colors based on the current setting (or at least I don't think you can).
