Intro

secret-santa can help you manage a list of secret santa participants by randomly assigning pairings and sending emails. It can avoid pairing couples to their significant other, and allows custom email messages to be specified.

Usage

Copy config.yml.template to config.yml and enter in the connection details for your outgoing mail server. Modify the participants and couples lists and the email message if you wish.

cd secret-santa/
cp config.yml.template config.yml

Install Python 2.x or 3.x. Install pip (if you have not installed it yet). To install pip, download: https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py, Then run the following command:

python get-pip.pyb

Optionally install virtualenv via pip and test your installation:

sudo pip install virtualenv
virtualenv --version

Create a virtual environment for the project. Make sure you are already in the secret-santa folder:

virtualenv secret-santa

To begin using the virtual environment, it needs to be activated:

source secret-santa/bin/activate

Once pip has been installed, run the following command (the --user option is not neccessary if you use virtualenv):

pip install -r requirements.txt --user <your_user>

If you are done working in the virtual environment for the moment, you can deactivate it:

deactivate

Once configured, call secret-santa:

python secret_santa.py

Calling secret-santa without arguments will output a test pairing of participants.

    Test pairings:

    Chad ---> Bill
    Jen ---> Sharon
    Bill ---> Chad
    Sharon ---> Jen

    To send out emails with new pairings,
    call with the --send argument:

        $ python secret_santa.py --send

To send the emails, call using the --send argument

python secret_santa.py --send
