One of the most important communication skills necessary for a successful academic career – and many other careers – is the ability to write effectively. This course addresses the needs of nonnative speakers of English in developing their writing skills, and we focus on the mechanics of English sentences as well as the local and global discourse structure of written texts. I encourage a workshop atmosphere where student work is reviewed and discussed by the class. I also provide direct feedback on regular writing assignments. The assignments encourage you to focus on your skills as you write about your research and personal interests.

- Describe key features of rhetorical structure of academic written English.
- Identify your specific strengths and weaknesses when using written English.
- Draft, revise, and edit a piece of writing appropriate for an American academic audience.
- Develop clarity, accuracy, and effectiveness in your writing.
This course follows a workshop format and meets only once per week. This means that most work will be collaborative and student led, with minimal lecturing. There will also be a considerable amount of homework assignments. You should expect to be sharing your writing with other students and giving/receiving feedback from me and other students. Your grade will be based upon completion of weekly writing assignments and active participation.
Our weekly meetings will have roughly the following structure:
- Freewrite warmup
- Review and new topic lecture
- Group writing activity
- Feedback and discussion
Weekly homework is split into three parts:
- Journal
- Discussion Post
- Writing Assignment
The course is open to international PhD students, postdocs, and TGS master's students.
