It's winter in Chicago, and you don't know where you can leave your car parked? We got you.
Chicago has a fairly onerous and unsually series of winter parking bans which trace their historical origin to the 1979 Chicago Blizzard
This is the official info on it: https://www.chicago.gov/city/en/depts/streets/provdrs/traffic/svcs/winter-snow-parking-restrictions.html
Currently, the city provides this not never descriptive or easy to read map: https://www.chicago.gov/content/dam/city/depts/streets/supp_info/Snow20112012/Snow20172018/overnightL_120617.pdf
I find the map super hard to read, and haven't seen any media outlets do a better job.
As a resident, I need an easy and interactive way to tell where I might get towed if I leave my car.
- Something that just shows one point, not the whole city.
- An address lookup would be helpful.
- An interactive map. Sometimes I park at my house, sometimes not, so I need to change where I'm parked.
- I might have other parking needs, issues with other parking issues and I need a reliable way to check things.
- What about construction?
- IRL signage, digital notifications?
- Here where I was, but I don't know where my car is?
We need data on:
- which street segments are illegal for winter overnight or 2 inch snow parking?
- Geometry, multiline string
- a reasonable buffer around those geometries
- When the restrictions are in effect (bonus)
- where the user wants to park/is parked
- Lat/Lng Point
