Documentation

Preset Groups fx .. effect presets sx .. special effect presets nx .. Nikn like effect presets cx .. Cann like effect presets tx .. technical effect presets mx .. mono and blach&white effect presets

Presets

  • fxCineastic... A cold cineastic preste.

  • mxFilm... These presets try to replicate the color frequency sensitivities of some analog B&W films.

Separation of effect presets and technical presets: Only the tx.. presets contain changes to the "Geometry" (Lens Correction, Rotate & Straighten, Perspective, Crop, Vignette Correction). The tx.. presets also contain “Detail” (Sharpening, Noise Reduction, Skin Tune) settings. T his way you can mix the tx.. presets with the other presets.

  • sxPhotoChrome Photochrom is a process for producing colorized images from black-and-white photographic negatives. The finished print was produced using at least six, but more commonly ten to fifteen, tint stones. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photochrom]

*** Details on RAW development

  • Nik*n's Active-D Lighting (ADL)
  • Cann's Auto Lighting Optimiser Nikn's Active-D Lighting is in-camera image processing feature.

Active D-Lighting is a two step process to get a better balanced image (slightly brighter shadows, more detail in the highlights).

This results in an adjusted tone curve in the in camera JPEG conversion that

  • boosts the shadows (making them brighter) and
  • adjusts the highlights and mid-tones to where they belong (according to Nikon). As it is entirely software based the same effect can be reproduced later on the computer in post processing.

This only effects your jpg or the preview image that is embedded in the RAW. If you have activated this feature the preview of your shot on the camera display will be brighter than the RAW itself. When opening such an RAW file in ACDSee you may be surpred that it a lot to dark.

In ACDSee RAW development you can correct this using

  • Tone Curves or

  • Light EQ or

  • Fill Light (no perfect solution, but easy to handle). Using Exposure doesn't bring you the effect, because the whole image will get brigher and the whites will be over-exposed.

  • H'(Extrahigh) Fill Light: 40

  • H(igh)

  • N(ormal)

  • L(ow)

  • Off

Rather than only adjusting the shape of the tone curve (as most similar systems do), the Nikon system also adjusts exposure by one or two thirds of a stop. See the tone curves.

In this case use the txActive-D Lightning presets to correct this.
