/portrait-age-regression

A proof-of-concept web app to predict an individual's age from an image of their portrait.

This repository contains a Convolutional Neural Network deep learning model that has been trained to predict the age of a person from an image of their portrait.

You can see how the model fares on images within the UTKFace dataset, or on your own user-uploaded images by visiting the web app.

The App

App Screenshot

With no clear plans to serve our CNN model anywhere, I still wanted to be able to display it's performance. So, I built a quick Plotly Dash application in python to naively provide model inference at a limited scale.

The app is hosted on a Heroku server at www.howoldarethey.ca (or directly at https://how-old-are-they.herokuapp.com). It's a free server, so it may take some time to boot up from hibernation.

The Data

The UTKFace dataset is described by it's source as follows:

UTKFace dataset is a large-scale face dataset with long age span (range from 0 to 116 years old). The dataset consists of over 20,000 face images with annotations of age, gender, and ethnicity. The images cover large variation in pose, facial expression, illumination, occlusion, resolution, etc. This dataset could be used on a variety of tasks, e.g., face detection, age estimation, age progression/regression, landmark localization, etc.

In other words, it is a collection of portraits on a wide variety of faces of various ages, genders, and ethnicities.

It should be noted that our model has been trained on cropped and centered images of these faces, and so inference on "far-away" faces will be limited.

The CNN Model

For this image recognition task, we aimed to extract some sort of measure of age from our portait images. Built on top of the ResNet Model Architecture, our model uses pretrained convolutional layers (and pooling) in blocks described in the relevent paper. After these convolutional layers, we implement fully a handful of fully connected layers with ReLu activation functions, using Dropout to reduce overfitting.

We make use of the L1 Smooth Function (Huber Loss) in PyTorch to train our model, along with the Adam optimizer with a small amount of L2 Regularization to avoid overpowering weights (thus reducing overfitting even further).
