vis_params and url_format variables e.g. here and here appear unused.

I'm not positive of the convention, but it seems that the default for vis_params is set during initialization and url_format is set by _get_tile_url_format.

Can these be removed?
I agree. Those two variables are not needed. They are available during initialization.
