Request: token symbols

Closed this issue · 38 comments

I'd like to make a request for some additional symbols: the additional tokens in the game. In this case it would be the Stress, Ion, Tractor Beam, Weapons Disabled (from SLAM), and Extra Munition tokens. Obviously Focus, Evade, Shield, Crit, Target Lock, and Cloak are already taken care of since they have matching symbols on cards.

Not sure if this is in scope or even possible ( I don't actually know how you get the high-quality glyphs :) ), but it would probably be a good addition.

Thanks!

It's not a bad idea.

I actually use this font for Heroes of the Aturi Cluster and there are a
few odds and ends I have considered sticking in unused Unicode spaces that
would be very useful to me.

Maybe Geordanr and Hinny would also like to weigh in.

Yeah there are a few custom versions of glyphs that would be cool: Special firing arc with a torpedo for Ghost, a custom S-Loop for IG-88D. But I'm able to manage without them :p

I can't think of a reason not to include tokens in the font. It's a good idea.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I would definitely use these new symbols in Squadron Benchmark :-)

Alright. I'm going to use this thread to document process and get feedback on the work. I don't know about a timeline right now, but most of this is pretty straightforward work.

I'd be interested to learn how you extract the glyphs from the cards. I'd love to help out, but I don't know the proper approach :)

@guidokessels - Many came from the rulebook PDF rules that FFG released. The icons were vector in there, so it was really easy to zoom way in and reference them.

The ship ones almost entirely end up being drawn/traced.

@FedoraMark, Do these special-case icons work?

@armoredgear7 oh man all of those look fantastic. And the custom ones are great too! I'd say rotate the arrow for the custom S-Loop to be 45 degrees instead of 90 degrees.

Not sure that's better / looks like a Talon Roll?

Hmm good point, and it does make sense to have it 90 degrees now that I think about it since the Turn is 90 degrees too. Yeah the first works better.

Hinny commented

Wow! I agree that they tokens look fantastic.

Regarding hard turn s-loop, I think your original proposal makes more sense since the ship will end facing 90 degrees from original position, not 135 degrees.

Would it also make sense to have an inverted glyph? Like border of shape and black symbol? Like how ■ and □ compare.

Or perhaps a solid version of each token shape so they can be stacked to colorize the interior symbol without needing to turn them into images or non-font vectors.

Not to make extra work for you. I'm super happy with what you already have :D

I was actually planning to do positive/negative versions, as I think it makes sense as well.

I'd also like to add a Rebel pilot helmet, Imperial pilot helmet, Boba Fett helmet, and a fancy "upgrade" arrow for use in my Heroes of the Aturi Cluster docs. I'll work on those later.

Awesome! Oh in that case can you also do an outline/negative for the rebel symbol? I like to use that to differentiate Resistance from Rebellion since the cards invert the color (essentially). Thanks!

That is a good idea.

Wow, they look great ! Thanks a lot for this work !
Like FedoraMark, to keep them as font symbols, it would be super if the border could be shown too, so writing the TL symbol in red or in blue would make it look that the real ones.
Edit: actually, it would be the negative of these, with a border.
But I'm already perfectly fine with these, I'll use them tonight :-)

So I got another idea today! ( Yay more needless work! :P )

I was looking for something to use as a generic "upgrade of any type" symbol and it doesn't look like FFG uses one (correct me if I'm wrong). I could use one as a "ship is using one or more upgrades" indicators for an app.

Think it'd be possible to turn the little thing they use for Squad Points into a glyph? It's also used on pilot cards but I think those could be supplanted with the pilot helmets you were wanting to make.

Good idea; will add.

One more simple custom glyph request. (I promise this is the last one!)

Outrider title only allows for firing Cannons outside of your firing arc. Can you combine Cannon symbol with 360 arrow (similar to the torpedo/180 attack you did?).

Sure; easy.

Thanks! You're doing great work! I hate to keep asking for more things XD

Just found two more pilots with 'special' firing conditions: YV-666 (•Moralo Eval) - 180+Cannon; and B-wing (•Nera Dantels) - 360+Torpedoes.

But instead of just asking for these why not future-proof and provide the attack icon variants (360, 180, Front/Back) without the fireball center? Then we can easily stack them however we'd like.

I think this is the full set?

Looks like it. Everything looks fantastic! Love the pilot helmets too!

Oh wait, think you can add the Rebel icon outline for Resistance?

I just checked my list of icons, and added it:

thumbs up looks good to go!

It'll take me some time to dump all of these new glyphs into the font files and test the spacing.

The updated Font is pretty much done. I've implemented the special firing arc icons without primary weapon symbols in them, but they require some finessing to line up. Any secondary upgrade icon you put inside them will need its baseline shifted up slightly, and made about 30% smaller.

I also adjusted the squad point icon to fit nicely with eurostile in the same font size, which just saves time when working in InDesign.

All of the tokens were kept to their correct relative sizes, and all of the round ones are scaled to the existing glyphs for upgrades:

Here's the code map for the new characters:

Looks fantastic! Should keep us satisfied until Wave X! :P

Hey, any update status on these? I don't want to rush you if you're too busy, but I also want to make sure you haven't forgotten about this! ;)

Actually, yeah. I finished the font a couple days ago and forgot to post an update/hand it off. Here it is (file is labelled v9.002):

Someone commit this?

Much appreciated thank you!!

I'll add it and update the CSS/index tonight.
