Primary LanguagePHP

The Bilingual Categories Hack

Relabels default categories as “languages” and makes them available on pages.

Description

This plugin is a hack. It requires that you set up your categories in WordPress as languages, i.e.:

  • English (slug: en)
  • Deutsch (slug: de)

It then

  • relabels categories as languages (props @janfabry!)
  • makes them available on pages
  • when the current category is de:
    • sets locale to de_DE
    • reloads the default textdomain in the front-end

In order to reload your theme’s textdomain “on the fly” as well, you would currently need to hook your call of load_theme_textdomain to the glckPress_bilingual_categories__reload_textdomain hook. Try putting something like this in your theme’s functions.php:

function yourprefix_load_textdomain() {

	load_theme_textdomain( 'your_theme_textdomain', 'your_theme_language_subdir' );
}
add_action( 'glckPress_bilingual_categories__reload_textdomain', 'yourprefix_load_textdomain' );

Feel free to use, but know what you’re doing!

  • There might occur a performance load if you try to add more than 1 secondary language (primary=English) and then switch from one secondary language to the other.
