SignalMap

Android application that shows the coverage map of your area. This application obtains the signal strength and current location reported by OS and shows it on a map.

It has a service running always in background collecting data and saving it in a persistent data storage. The data is displayed on a heat map, and the user is able to filter it by network technology (2G, 3G, 4G).

screenshot

The app uses Google Maps Android API v2, so the device needs to run Google Play Services.

Map's leyend

  • From -50dBm to -85dBm: green color
  • From -85dBm to -105dBm: yellow color
  • From -105dBm to -120dBm: red color

Limitations

Some Android frameworks may suppress signal strength notification when the screen is off to conserve power. The app screen remains on as long as it stacks in the foreground. Notice that it still works on background when the app is still on. This limitation depends on how the RIL driver was implemented, usually by the manufacturer.

Configuration

Change GOOGLE_API_KEY in the AndroidManifest.xml
