This README explains all the steps required to replicate the work done for the article, "A meta-analysis of the MIREX Structural Segmentation task."

All of the contents of this repository are released under the MIT license (shown below).

How to Reproduce the Paper

  1. You will need Ruby and Matlab and a connection to the Internet.

  2. Clone or download a version of the Structural Analysis Evaluation code: https://github.com/jblsmith/structural_analysis_evaluation

  3. Edit the directory locations specified in "user_paths.txt". The default setting for "mirex_data" should be fine; just set the other path to wherever you downloaded the toolbox in Step 2.

  4. Get the MIREX data and get the public annotation data:

    • Option 1: run the Ruby script "get_mirex_estimates.rb"
      • This version takes a while because it requires downloading lots of small files from the MIREX website.
    • Option 2: unzip "mirex_data.zip"; then run "get_mirex_estimates.rb" with argument "2".
      • Part 2 of the Ruby script gets the public annotations for you.
    • Note: whichever way you do it, you will need room for hundreds of thousands of small text files. Although the size is only about 50 MB, the size on disk can be over 430 MB because of the minimum file allocation size.
  5. Unzip all the folders that you obtained. Note: in this version, one of the repositories, the Ewald Peiszer repository, is included already as a zip file ("ep_groundtruth_txt.zip"). You should move this into the subfolder "mirex_data/public_data" and unzip it there.

    • Note: after the SALAMI zipfile contains a zipfile, so after unzipping it, you will need to unzip one of its contents again.
    • Note: due to inconsistencies in how different zipping programs handle things, the folder structure upon unzipping may be inconsistent. Please look at the Ground Truth Directory map below and make sure your files unzip in the same way. If they don't, you'll have to move things around until the structure matches.
  6. Run the Matlab script "generate_smith2013_ismir" and wait for all the data to be assembled, and for the figures to be generated. They will appear in "./plots". This repository includes what those pictures should look like. Hopefully you overwrite them with exact replicas.

    • You should wind up with exact copies of the files already included: datacube2012, datacube2013, and datacube2014, which compile the evaluation results.
    • You should also have new files MirexDataStruct2012, MirexDataStruct2013, and MirexDataStruct2014, which consist of all the ground truth data, algorithm predictions, and public ground truth descriptions.
  7. You're done!

This project now includes MIREX data from 2013 and 2014. This data is not necessary to replicate Smith & Chew 2013, but is handy, and needed to replicate Smith & Goto 2016.
