Some sample code examples in Python to scrape data from the web and saving it to a database.

This repository is the fully implemented code of the tutorial "Step by Step Guide on Scraping Data from a Website and Saving it to a Database" on howpcrules.com. For a more detailed tutorial please take a look at the blog post.

Web scraping and saving data to a database is the goal of this piece of code and the sample page being scraped is the following: https://howpcrules.com/sample-page-for-web-scraping/.

Requirements

  1. A working version of Python 2 or Python 3.
  2. Locally running MySQL software.
  3. Python libraries beautifulsoup4, MySQLdb aka. mysqlclient and requests.
  4. An active internet connection.

Quick Start

  1. Open your locally run MySQL software (phpMyAdmin, Sequel Pro etc.) and create a database with the name "scraping_sample".
  2. Create a user with the username "scraping_user" and give the user the needed privileges to read and modify the table "scraping_sample".
  3. Navigate to the MySQL command line and execute the following commands to create the needed tables to save the scraped data into.

 `id` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
 `name_of_class` varchar(255) COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci NOT NULL,
