The guided tour extension (EXT:guide) for TYPO3 provides you the ability for creating guided tours through the TYPO3 backend. These tours should give editors an introduction of different areas and features, so that he easily finds out who to use TYPO3.
The different guided tours are configured by page TypoScript (tsconfig). Translation values are provided as usually by XLIFF files.
Developers of third party extensions have the ability to provide own guided tours for their backend modules.
The guided tour extension comes with an own backend module, which you will find in the help menu in the topbar of the TYPO3 backend. It will list you all (for your current user accessible) guided tours. You're able to start each tour or resume tours which you have started once. Additionally you're able to reactivate tours, that you had marked as Don't show again.

All tours must defined in the page TypoScript node mod.guide.tours

With help of this node you're able to execute actions, like adding or removing a CSS class to an element or open select boxes in order to show specific values.

Since guided tours are defined by simple page TypoScript (tsconfig), the modifying of an existing tour or creating a new tour can be done in different ways.

If you want to provide a tour with your own extension or extension-theme, just create a page TypoScript file in your favorite location, for example in
EXT:your_ext/Configuration/PageTS/GuidedTour.pagets
. This file needs to be included by yourext_localconf.php

These configuration file contains all your modifications of a existing tour or a definition of a new guided tour.

If you don't have an own extension, you are able to modify a tour by user TypoScript. You can do this by adding the changes directly within the respective user or, if you want to change tours for multiple users, within a backend user group - so you're able to assign the same tours/tour modifications to multiple users.
For example, if you want the second popover of the ViewModule tour append on the right instead of the bottom, you would insert a TypoScript like that:

In the same way you're able to provide new defined guided tours.
Since version 2.0.0 you're able to define new tours by PHP. The advantage of this is, that you can outsource the step
configuration into external yaml-files and the Page-TypoScript isn't so overloaded by processing all the steps again and
again. This definition can be done by a short entry in your ext_localconf.php

The \Tx\Guide\Utility\GuideUtility::addTour
required the following parameters:
- The tour identifier equally to the definition by Page-TypoScript.
- The title for the tour. This can be a localization identifier too.
- The description for the tour. This can be a localization identifier too.
- The Module-Key of the tour. This is the same like the
m
-Parameter of the Module. - The Icon-Identifier for the tour
- The base path for your *.yaml configuration files. By using this addTour method the *.yaml files contain the step configuration of the tour
Note:
When you're defining your tours by this way, you're still able to overwrite your tour in Page-TypoScript (tsconfig) or User-TypoScript. This behaves like descripted above.
By providing your step configuration by using YAML files, you're able to use different steps for different TYPO3
versions. Just set the stepsConfiguration
setting in your tour configuration on the base folder of your *.yaml files,
as you've seen in Adding tours by using PHP. In our tours we set it for example to:

Now this base folder needs some sub folder in which the tours for the different TYPO3 versions are stored. Each folder is simply named by the major version number of TYPO3 - for example:

In these folders the guided tour searches for YAML files, which have the same name as your tour identifier.
For example, if you're running a TYPO3 LTS 8.7 and you want to define a tour with identifier CreatePage

guided tours extension would search the steps configuration file in Configuration/Tours/TYPO3-8/CreatePage.yaml
