This is a brief proof I wrote to convince myself that the number of phones heard during spoken word recognition relates in a Zipfian fashion to the number of candidates vying to be recognized, at least following cohort-style models of speech recognition. I believe the result is correct, but I may refine the proof from time to time to correct typos, logical errors, etc.
