The Ivy Nunchuck Adapter allows a Nunchuck Controller to be used as a USB HID Mouse or USB HID Gamepad. s Commercially available Nunchuck Controllers have a thumbstick and two buttons. The thumbstick has a range of motion approximately ±30° (~±15 mm motion) and requires about 100 grams-force to fully deflect.
The device is comprised of off-the-shelf electronics that are assembled without the need to solder into a 3D printed enclosure. The overall cost of materials for the adapter is $20 (plus $8 for component shipping). Paired with an old Nintendo Wii Nunchuck controller or a Nunchuck Controller replacement ($10-$20), this provides a cost effective solution for an input device.
The Ivy Nunchuck Adapter can be used directly as a left or right thumbstick for the Microsoft Xbox Adaptive Controller (XAC) using the left or right USB ports.
The Ivy Nunchuck Adapter is open assistive technology (OpenAT). Under the terms of the open source licenses, the device may be built, used, and improved upon by anyone.
The current version of the Ivy Nunchuck Adapter (v1.0) has been built and user tested.

This design is part of the OpenAT Joystick project, a collection of open source designs for digital access and adapted gaming.
- Plug the Nunchuck Controller into the Ivy Nunchuck Adapter.
- Plug the USB-C end of the USB Cable into the Ivy Nunchuck Adapter.
- Connected the other end of the USB cable to the host device (use a suitable adapter if necessary).
- Reset the Adapter by pressing the Reset Button or removing and replacing the USB-C Cable.
- When the Status Light turns red, press and hold both the C Button and the Z Button on the Nunchuck.
- When the Status Light turns green, release the buttons.
- Press the C button (round button) to toggle between modes. The light on the Adapter will indicate the current mode: USB HID Mouse - Yellow, USB HID Gamepad - Blue.
- Press and release the Z button (square button) to set the mode. The light will blink in the colour of the selected mode.
- Reset the Adapter by pressing the Reset Button or removing and replacing the USB-C Cable.
- Move the joystick to control the cursor.
- Press the C button to left click.
- Press the Z button to right click.
- Move the joystick to control the joystick.
- Press the C button to activate Button 1.
- Press the Z button to activate Button 2.
There are several options for obtaining the device.
This is an open-source assistive technology, so anyone is free to build it. All of the files and instructions required to build the Ivy Nunchuck Adapter are contained within this repository. Refer to the Maker Guide below.
If you would like to obtain a Ivy Nunchuck Adapter, you may submit a build request through the MMC Assistive Device Library Listing: to have a volunteer maker build the device. As the requestor, you are responsible for reimbursing the maker for the cost of materials and any shipping.
