Are you still maintaining this project actively @matze? It seems like there hasn't been much action here for a time now.
Maybe we can use the Covid-19 lock out to push this package a bit together.
I with two other person develope new them by modifing few thing in Metropolis and my job is to transfer they idea into LaTeX code. If someone is eager any help is welcome.
I've now forked metropolis and fixed some of the longstanding bugs: https://github.com/jolars/moloch. The package was just published on CTAN: https://ctan.org/pkg/moloch.
The theme looks basically the same but I've simplified several aspects of the theme and removed quite a bit of code which I felt just made the package fragile to upstream changes in beamer. Feel free to contribute!
