/dojo-ansible-container-toolkit

A container based toolkit for creating easy to assemble Ansible demos, labs, workshops, and PoCs

Primary LanguageHTML

Overview

Dojo or more fully dojo-ansible-container-toolkit is an all in one container-based toolkit for simply building, constructing, and running lab, workshops, PoCs etc in containers. It allows the user to run locally or remotely typical ansible lab environemnts via either docker or podman. Containers, aka vmlets typically run both init, sshd and support systemd. So they appear similar to VMs or instances rather than contianers and support modules such as service e.g. you can enable httpd etc.

Quick 3 minute example

Pre-requisites

  • Container run-time

    • docker

    • podman

  • docker-compose

    • podman 3 supports docker-compose

    • podman 2 can be extended via pip3 install podman-compose

Motivations and Use Cases

Like many developers, admins, architects etc I always loved vagrant but found it heavy In complex environments setting up vagrant was painful and resource hungry. Being ex Sun

Plus yaml is easier to read, IMO, than a ruby Vagrantfile

101 Things you can do with Dojo

  • Very rapidly modify deployments on the fly

    • i.e. you can add in an additional webserver whilst continuing to work

  • save your work

Security

Be aware that in most cases, some or all containers run with the --privileged option, which is, of course, a potential security hazard.
