It seems like the references that are not necessarily related to the main content of the paper are added to the prompt, so the ai gets distracted by them.

Same, but I don't think it's referencing any particular paper at all, it's just hallucinating something that sounds right from your prompt. Like I bet if you ask it to give you the implications on Klingon physiology it will probably make up something that sounds right.
