Description of FIG Virtual Worlds and Simulations

The Virtual Worlds and Simulations Foundational Interest Group (FIG) is focused on open source and standards for the creation, management, and operation of persistent experiences. This work includes the communication interfaces, human sensory interfaces, virtual XR devices, layout of the scene and relational identifiers related to the environment, communication initiation, and configuration of worlds. See the FIG's charter for full details.

What does the Foundational Interest Group do?

  • Identify and produce a specification for server querying of concurrency, layering, content policies, and user policies.
  • Identify and create static or streaming object scene formats using existing and new standards to define or compose world object placement with relational data to identify internal or external objects, or events.
  • Define a queryable schema for hardware and software capabilities of endpoint devices that interact with users.
  • Create a modular and extensible metadata schema exposing coordinate system, grid, scale, physics model, predictability model, refresh requirements, and actions that may be exposable or discoverable.
  • Define the basic schema of portable interoperable protocols layered on a network stack for client/server communication to enable cross-server visibility, as desired.
  • Create rating and policies for enablement of users and content, along with access policies for ownership, control, and visibility of internal, external, or user-generated content.
  • Define an extensible and interoperable schema for user access authentication models to interface and expose metadata to meet enablement requirements.

How do I get involved?

  • Contact us on Discord. The FIG has a specific chat channel #virtual-world-sims
  • Attend any of our public meetings by connecting to the #virtual-world-sims voice channel on OMF's Discord server. See the OMF Calendar for upcoming meetings and details.
    • The FIG hosts a weekly meeting on Wednesdays at 12:00pm ET / 17:00 UTC / 6:00 PM CET to discuss Virtual Worlds and Simulations features, recently contributed work, pending RFCs, and other items of interest to the FIG. Look for the meeting titled FIG-virtual-world-sims on OMF calendar. Meeting agendas are posted in advanced as GitHub discussions and anyone can raise points for discussion.
  • Subscribe to our mailing list, which is used for polls, discussions and features database.

Who can attend or participate?

The OMF cannot work without the help and input from as many of its community members as possible. You do not need anyone’s permission to get involved and contribute to the project. The #artificial-intel channel on OMF Discord is a great place to begin getting involved. Many of our community members regularly share ideas, updates, and resources there. You can also find a number of topics under the GitHub Discussions area which need your input.
