Simplified Product Data (SPD)

Simplified Product Data is an open source data structure designed to provide developers with easy access to core product information (including parsed barcode data) when a GS1 Digital Link barcode is scanned.

For example this GS1 Digital Link homepage returns SPD when requested using Accept: application/json:

Data Structure

SPD contains 3 top level objects:

Core product information:

language string Language code for the product information
title string Title of the product
description string A brief description of the product
images array[object] Array of objects containing product images
barcode object Object containing decoded barcode data
price string Price of the product
currency string Currency code for the price
availability string Availability status of the product

Motivation

The new GS1 Digital Link barcode will replace all retail barcodes by 2027. It's designed to connect physical products to the internet by turning each GS1 GTIN into a URL that humans and machines can follow for data.

The trouble is, the GS1 Digital Link spec still requires developer to:

  • Parse barcode values within their application code
  • Follow links and execute multiple request for core product information
  • Navigate complex JSON objects to extract core product information

The goal of SPD is to provide the above information to the developer in the first request. Additional information such as ingredients can be obtained by following the related rel=gs1:ingredientsInfo link in the links array.

Background

Simplified Product Data was created by the Orca Scan team as part of the GS1 Digital Link solution. Orca Scan automatically generates a GS1 Digital Link homepage for every GS1 GTIN, the SPD format is returned when requesting a GS1 Digital Link URL with the HTTP header Accept: application/json.
