Strange offsets?

I've noticed a few times the labels show up far offset from their target positions. Any ideas what might cause this or how to work around it? This has led to issues with saving as .png with a tight layout sometimes, causing an error of the general form "can't have images greater than 32768 pixels". The workaround is to savefig(..., bbox_extra_artists=[]), but I'd like to find a real solution if possible

That image looks really weird!

I can't think of anything of the top of my head. Can you attach the code/data fragment required to generate the above plot?

Thanks, and darn. Unfortunately, getting this down to a MWE will be quite some work, so I can't do it quickly. If it comes time to publish this, I'll dig further.

I will keep this issue open. It might also attract attention from anyone else running into a similar problem.
