The Julian Day is the number of days that has occurred since noon on Jan 1, 4713 BC. The Julian Day is used by astronomers to keep track of time, irrespective of non-metric time units like week, month, year, etc. The Modified Julian Day is modulo 100,000 days (273 years), and minus 0.5 days for sake of simplicity.
