INTRODUCTION
============

Hotplug2 is aimed at early Linux user space, that is, initramfs or initrd,
possibly also at embedded devices (such as WRT-like routers) or very weak
machines, such as 386/486 (some still use them as workstations).

Hotplug2 connects to the uevent netlink socket and reads events. It supports
simple rules for processing the events. The rules allow matching of the
variables obtained by the uevent socket and allows execution of applications,
with those variables set as their environmental variables. Further
documentation of rules syntax is available.

Alternatively, Hotplug2 can run without any rules, and simply blindly attempt
to modprobe whenever an adequate event is received.

Hotplug2 supports cold plugging simply by calling the 'udevtrigger' binary
internally. As udevtrigger is fairly independent on the rest of udev, it can be
easily embedded along with Hotplug2.

The advantages over udev are:
 * Faster processing of events - that is especially notable on slower hardware.
 * Much smaller footprint of the application.

The disadvantages:
 * Limited rules system, designed rather for trivial operations than
   for complex desktop setups.
 
Therefore, as said earlier, Hotplug2 definitely is not aimed as replacement
for udev on desktop, with the exception of initramfs / initrd.

Hotplug2 is designed with pluggable worker architecture for different setups
with different resource constraints and demands. There are two base modules
distributed, single process and forking, that are described in sections below.
There's also an example worker, servering as a skeleton for any possible
third-party workers.

USAGE
=====

The following examples demonstrate usage for one-time hardware detection.

Recommended usage for InitRD, if you do not have any modules you want to
load manually: ::

Recommended usage for InitRD, if you have modules you want to load manually: ::

Please note that if you run hotplug2 and udevd simultaneously, both will
suffer significant slowdown.

To have hotplug2 running permanently and perform coldplug, run: ::

  hotplug2 --persistent --set-coldplug-cmd /sbin/something \
           --set-rules-file /etc/hotplug2/main.rules \
           --set-worker /lib/hotplug2/worker_some.so &

Note that hotplug2 will not daemonize itself, you have to use an equivalent
to Debian's start-stop-daemon, or otherwise ensure it daemonizes.

WORKERS
=======

There are two base workers distributed with Hotplug2:

 * Single process worker
 * Forking worker

Single process worker executes all rules in a row as they come, and if a
command takes some time to get processed, all the following events have
to wait. The benefit, however, is very low overhead for processing and
very low memory requirements. This worker accepts no configuration options.

Forking worker spawns multiple children that receive events from the
parent and execute them. The processes are spawned on-demand, but can
process multiple events and terminate only after a period of inactivity.

Furthermore, forking working attempts to optimize spawning by executing
the rules in the master process, if the rule is believed not to block
and a new child process would have to be spawned. A rule is expected
to be slow if it executs any software, if it loads firmware or if
a 'flag-slow' is specified in the rules that match the uevent.

Forking worker accepts several configuration options.

--max-children <number>
  Maximum number of child processes allowed to be spawned.

--always-fork
  Disable optimalization and never process an event in the master process.
