This is the portable version of Ecere SDK

 * FLAVORS *

The Portable Ecere SDK comes in 4 flavors:

   * "Core"
   * "MinGW"
   * "MinGW C++"
   * "All In One"

"Core" is the bare minimum. It contains only the Ecere SDK and it's little
documentation. Use it only if you have your own compiler installation.
For example, if you already have MinGW installed on the machine or machines
where you plan to use the Portable Ecere SDK. Be aware that different
versions of the MinGW components might create problems.

"MinGW" adds MinGW (make, binutils, gcc and gdb) and upx to "Core". This is
provinding you with a complete compiler and toolchain out of the box. This
includes the debugger for working out bugs in your projects. You won't have
to rely on a local installtion of a compiler. Note that only the C compiler
of MinGW is included.

"MinGW C++" simply adds MinGW's C++ compiler to the "MinGW" flavor.

"All In One" adds many samples and the source code for Ecere SDK on top of
the "MinGW C++" flavor.

 * USAGE *

You can run the ide and documentor using ide.bat and documentor.bat
respectively. You can do this at the command prompt or in your file manager.
If you want to build your project from the command prompt or just play with
the compiler, you can use console.bat for that purpose. It will setup the
search paths necessary to do so. Note that when simply using the IDE, the
compiler configuration takes care of that.

The packages for each flavor provide a "home" folder where you may keep your
projects but the ide will track the paths to your projects and other files
relative to the current location of the portable binaries.

 * DETAILS *

The Portable Ecere SDK is only available for Windows right now. A Linux
version should be possible. Please contact the Ecere community if your are
interested in hacking any other version of the Ecere SDK.

The Portable Ecere SDK is built from the exact same source code as the Ecere
SDK itself. The binaries provided are identical to the ones that would be
copied onto your machine if you used the official Ecere SDK installer.

What makes the SDK behave as portable is the fact that the configuration
file is present in the same directory as the binaries.

All flavors contain all available internationalization files so you may want
to set the LANGUAGE environment variable to use the Ecere SDK and MinGW in
your prefered language. Note that you may find the i18n of Ecere SDK to be
limited. Please help us with the translation effort.

We propose that to be qualified as portable an application should follow
these simple rules.

   * be packaged as a simple zip (or other compression format) archive
   * don't require an installer, simply extract archive to desired location
   * don't "pollute" the system with configuration
   * enable transportation of the installation
     (on a usb key for example that may change drive letter from use to use)
   * gracefuly handle transportation with relative paths when possible

The Ecere SDK is a Software Development Kit including:

   * A set of compiling tools for the eC programming language
                               ( http://www.ecere.com/technologies.html#eC )

   * An Integrated Development Environment, with the usual features such as:
      - A source code editor with auto-completion, syntax highlighting
      - Management of application and library projects
      - A visual debugger
      - A Rapid Application Development form designer, based on
        properties & methods 

   * A run time library, providing a uniform API across platforms, featuring:
      - A GUI toolkit (with a vast collection of powerful controls:
        Buttons, Edit boxes, Drop/Combo boxes, Menus, Tabs,
        Tree views/Grids/List boxes, file dialogs, ...)
      - A 2D graphics API (bitmaps, fonts, international text, basic drawing)
      - A 3D graphics API, supporting both Direct3D and OpenGL
        (3DS file format support)
      - A networking API which provide Sockets as well as a
        distributed objects system for eC
      - System functionality such as file access, multi-threading &
        synchronization, handling date & time, etc.

   * Additional libraries and code for more features, such as:
      - The Ecere Data Access (EDA) layer, an abstract relational database
        API, providing an active record system for eC. Currently it has
        drivers for a minimal Ecere RDBMS and SQLite (as well as an encrypted
        version using SQLiteCipher), and recently a basic Oracle driver was
        introduced
      - An audio library (supporting DirectSound on Windows and ALSA on Linux)
      - WIA Scanning support on Windows
      - SSL Sockets suport through OpenSSL
      - A 2D tiled based game graphics engine (Tiled map, Sprites, A*)

 * INSTALLATION *

Windows binaries are available from that page.

Daily-built Ubuntu Debian packages are available from our Ubuntu PPA:

To build from source, simply type make (mingw32-make on Windows).

It should build fine on Linux, on Windows with MinGW,
and on Mac OS X with a bit of luck.

To install, type make install (mingw32-make install on Windows).

Please note that at this time eC and the Ecere SDK only support 32 bit.
However, you should still be able to use the 32 bit version on a 64 bit machine.
64-bit support is planned for the future.

 * DOCUMENTATION *

The Ecere Tao of Programming is a Programmer's Guide (still work in progress)
that will teach you the foundations of eC and Ecere. You will find it under:

The Documentor is a tool under development to browse and document the APIs of
eC modules. You can use it to browse all available classes, methods and properties
of the Ecere runtime library. It is available from the Help menu in the IDE (F1).
However, at the moment the tool itself is being improved, and so not much 
descriptive info has been added yet.
