Project 1 - movie-viewer

movie-viewer is a movies app using the The Movie Database API.

Time spent: 10 hours spent in total

User Stories

The following required functionality is complete:

  • User can view a list of movies currently playing in theaters from The Movie Database.
  • Poster images are loaded using the UIImageView category in the AFNetworking library.
  • User sees a loading state while waiting for the movies API.
  • User can pull to refresh the movie list.

The following optional features are implemented:

  • User sees an error message when there's a networking error.
  • Movies are displayed using a CollectionView instead of a TableView.
  • User can search for a movie.
  • All images fade in as they are loading.
  • Customize the UI.

The following additional features are implemented:

  • List anything else that you can get done to improve the app functionality!

  1. How to remove gap between cells vertically
  2. Discuss a good way to display movie ratings

Project 2 - movie-viewer

movie-viewer is a movies app displaying box office and top rental DVDs using The Movie Database API.

Time spent: 25 hours spent in total

User Stories

The following required functionality is completed:

  • User can view movie details by tapping on a cell.
  • User can select from a tab bar for either Now Playing or Top Rated movies.
  • Customize the selection effect of the cell. (n/a for collection view)

The following optional features are implemented:

  • For the large poster, load the low resolution image first and then switch to the high resolution image when complete.
  • Customize the navigation bar.

The following additional features are implemented:

  • User can view movie trailers from Movie Details screen to a Web View that pulls up the Youtube page with a search query of the selected movie.
  • User can filter top rated films by genre.
    • Selected genre is persisted using User Defaults.
    • Table view cells update a to checkmark when selected.
    • Scroll view scrolls back to top when genre is changed.
  • Infinite scrolling.
  • Customize the UI.
    • Implemented search bar in navigation bar.
    • Customized spacing between cells in collection view.
    • Scroll effect in Movies Details screen with fixed poster background.
    • Trailers screen UI matches that of rest of app.
    • Added tab bar icons.

  1. Filter table view cells strange behavior where accessoryType checkmark gets toggled randomly as you scroll throught the table view.
  2. Infinite scrolling progress animation not working.
