πŸ“‘ Professional skills, education, experience

Ruth Baker

I want to use technology to positively impact the lives of users, and work with fantastic people to achieve our goals & maintain great software.

I've been a developer for over three years in FinTech. I'm a coding coach having been involved with codebar, Exercism, and my own coding club, which I find rewarding but also use to cement my knowledge by learning from others. After leaving my last job, I've been a volunteer web developer for Singing for Breathing RLH, providing an interactive songbook and an accessible low-carbon website, and, I've helped inform their policies to be more inclusive and welcoming. I keep a tech blog, contribute to Open Source, and attend tech events and learning sessions.

Other Interests

🎡 I am a participant of a community group called Singing for Breathing, which uses music to benefit people with breathlessness. I have fundraised for them, organised a talk with their founders for Clean Air Day, and I have collaborated with them on an open-source website and online song book.

🐝 I'm a nature lover and citizen scientist. I've volunteered as a BeeWalker for the Bumblebee Conservation Trust since 2017, collecting bumblebee abundance data for the iRecord database and conservation research. In my local community I have been providing insight and feedback regarding a major park development, and bee-friendly land maintenance.

πŸ’ƒ I taught dance in the late 90s, and I continue to be a dance enthusiast. I volunteered as a Transcriber for Rambert Voices in 2016/17; as a Mentor with Dance United in 2013/14; a Performer for the Olympic Ceremonies in 2012; and raised funds for Singing for Breathing with an Around the World Dance Marathon in 2023.

🏹 I am a member of Archery GB, and although I'm quite new to the sport, I am proud to have been placed top in the Kent Archery League 2023 tournament at my club, and to have become classified as Archer, 2nd Class.
