Dropseed Child Theme Starter is a simple starting point for the development of Wordpress child themes. It includes functions which perform tasks such as cleaning up the Wordpress head and adding favicons. Additionally, it includes practical and some stylistic customizations for the login screen and dashboard.
-
Download the package and add the
dist
(src if you want decompressed files) to your/wp-content/themes
directory. -
Change the name of the folder to your desired child theme name.
-
In
style.css
, change theTemplate:
value to your parent theme's folder name. Also, add your associated organization information. -
Modify
/lib/dashboard.php
to include your organization's name and link in the footer. -
Add your
screenshot.png
file to your child theme's topmost directory. -
In
/images/favicons
include favicons generated at realfavicongenerator if desired. If not, you can comment out the favicon implementation infunctions.php
as follows:$dropseed_includes = [ 'lib/setup.php', // Theme setup 'lib/cleanup.php', // Clean up functions 'lib/security.php', // Security related functions 'lib/login.php', // Custom login page 'lib/dashboard.php', // Customize dashboard 'lib/helpers.php', // Useful helper functions 'lib/favicons.php' // Adding favicons ];
$dropseed_includes = [ 'lib/setup.php', // Theme setup 'lib/cleanup.php', // Clean up functions 'lib/security.php', // Security related functions 'lib/login.php', // Custom login page 'lib/dashboard.php', // Customize dashboard 'lib/helpers.php', // Useful helper functions // 'lib/favicons.php' // Adding favicons ];
Note: you can use this same technique to remove any of the other partials included in the functions.php file, and therefore all modifications therein. For example, if you don't need to customize the login page:
$dropseed_includes = [ 'lib/setup.php', // Theme setup 'lib/cleanup.php', // Clean up functions 'lib/security.php', // Security related functions 'lib/login.php', // Custom login page 'lib/dashboard.php', // Customize dashboard 'lib/helpers.php', // Useful helper functions 'lib/favicons.php' // Adding favicons ];
$dropseed_includes = [ 'lib/setup.php', // Theme setup 'lib/cleanup.php', // Clean up functions 'lib/security.php', // Security related functions // 'lib/login.php', // Custom login page 'lib/dashboard.php', // Customize dashboard 'lib/helpers.php', // Useful helper functions 'lib/favicons.php' // Adding favicons ];
-
In
/login/images/
replacelogin-logo.svg
with your login logo. -
Enjoy!
An HTACCESS file has been intentionally excluded from the Dropseed Child Theme Starter. Requirements vary greatly and many, including myself, utilize the cascading nature of HTACCESS authority to include differing levels of security, accessibility, and more across personal or client subdirectories. However, it is strongly suggested that an HTACCESS file including minimum WordPress security changes and configurations is added to any installation thereof. To view, modify, and implement those security modifications I use across WordPress sites, download my HTACCESS starter by clicking here: HTACCESS Starter
