MDL (a Z80 assembler optimizer)

I spend an enourmous amount of time optimizing the Z80 assembler code of my games to make them fit within small 32KB or 48KB cartridges, and to make them run fast enough. So, I thought I'd try to write a tool that automatically does some of the optimizations that I do manually. I named it MDL after the "minimum description length" principle since, in a way, the goal of MDL is to reach the minimum description length representation of a program (although it currently only does simple optimizations).

MDL (Minimum Description Length), is a command line tool to optimize Z80/z80n/z180 assembler code. It is distributed as a Java JAR file, and from the command line, you can launch it like this:

java -jar mdl.jar

Moreover, mdl accepts a number of command line arguments in order to make it do what you want (see below).

Command Line Arguments (simplified, see below for comprehensive list)

java -jar mdl.jar <input file name(s)> [options]

Several input file names can be specified, separated by spaces. In case that more than one input file name is specified, MDL will just act as if there was a master assembler file that includes them all in the specified order.

Note: all the tasks concerning generating outputs (assembler, binaries, etc.) will be executed after the optimizers are run.

  • -help: for an exhaustive list of flags (just type java -jar mdl.jar -help).
  • -dialect <dialect>: selects which assembler dialect to use (mdl/asmsx/asmsx-zilog/glass/sjasm/sjasmplus/tniasm/tniasm045/tniasm10/winape/pasmo/sdcc/sdasz80/macro80/wladx/wladxz80).
  • -so: Runs the search-based-based optimizer (optimizes code if the input is an assembler file; generates code if the input file is a specification file).
  • -ro: Runs the code reoganizer optimizer.
  • -po: Runs the pattern-based optimizer.
  • -do: Runs the data optimizer (only provides potential ideas for space saving).
  • -asm : saves the resulting assembler code in a single asm file.
  • -bin : generates an assembled binary.
  • -st <output file>: to output the symbol table.

Command Line Arguments (comprehensive)

java -jar mdl.jar <input file name(s)> [options]

Several input file names can be specified, separated by spaces. In case that more than one input file name is specified, MDL will just act as if there was a master assembler file that includes them all in the specified order. Note: all the tasks concerning generating outputs (assembler, binaries, etc.) will be executed after the optimizers are run.

  • -help: to show this information (this is the only flag that can be used without specifying an input file).
  • -cpu <type>: to select a different CPU (z80/z80msx/z80cpc/z80n/z80next/z180/r800), where z80n and z80next are synonyms (default: z80msx).
  • -dialect <dialect>: to allow parsing different assembler dialects (mdl/asmsx/asmsx-zilog/glass/sjasm/sjasmplus/tniasm/tniasm045/tniasm10/winape/pasmo/sdcc/sdasz80/macro80/wladx/wladxz80) (default: mdl, which supports some basic code idioms common to various assemblers). Note that even when selecting a dialect, not all syntax of a given assembler might be supported.
  • -I <folder>: adds a folder to the include search path (-inc <folder> can also be used for compatibility with other assemblers).- -equ <symbol>=<value>: defines a symbol that will exist while parsing the assembler code.
  • -ansion: turns on color message output usin ANSI codes (default: on in Unix, off in Windows).
  • -ansioff: turns off color message output usin ANSI codes.
  • -quiet: turns off info messages; only outputs warnings and errors.
  • -diggest: turns off most info messages; only outputs summary messages, warnings and errors.
  • -debug: turns on debug messages.
  • -trace: turns on trace messages.
  • -warn: turns on all warnings.
  • -warn-labelnocolon: turns on warnings for not placing colons after labels.
  • -warn-jp(rr): turns on warnings for using confusing 'jp (hl)' instead of 'jp hl' (this is turned off by default in dialects that do not support this).
  • -warn-unofficial: turns on warnings for using unofficial op syntax (e.g., 'add 1' instead of 'add a,1'.
  • -warn-ambiguous: turns on warnings for using ambiguous or error-inducing syntax in some dialects.
  • -warn-labelless-jump: turns on warnings for using jumps that instead of jumping to a label, are defined as something like 'jp $+5'.- -do-not-convert-to-official: turns off automatic conversion of unofficial op syntax to official ones in assembler output.
  • -hex#: hex numbers render like #ffff (default). These flags also have analogous effect on binary and octal constant rendering.
  • -HEX#: hex numbers render like #FFFF.
  • -hexh: hex numbers render like 0ffffh.
  • -HEXH: hex numbers render like 0FFFFh.
  • -hex0x: hex numbers render like 0xffff.
  • -HEX0X: hex numbers render like 0XFFFF.
  • -+bin: includes binary files (incbin) in the output analyses.
  • -no-opt-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line to prevent optimizing it (default: mdl:no-opt).
  • -no-opt-start-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line to mark it as the start of a block of lines to be protected from optimization (default: mdl:no-opt-start).
  • -no-opt-end-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line to mark it as the end of a block of lines to be protected from optimization (default: mdl:no-opt-end).
  • -self-modifying-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line to indicate it is self-modifying (default: mdl:self-modifying). This is used by the optimizer to know that this instruction can turn into anything.
  • -page-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line to indicate the current page we are on (default: mdl:page). This is only used as a hint to MDL when when it generates sjasm-style symbols file (with the -st-sjasm flag).
  • -reads-registers-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line to indicate that a given instruction uses certain registers (default: mdl:reads-register). This is useful when some code uses some registers in a way that MDL cannot identify (e.g. self modifying or relocating code). Specify the registers as a comma or space separated list afterwards, like this: mdl:reads-register a, hl.
  • -jumptable-pragma <value>: changes the pragma to be inserted in a comment on a line that jumps to a function inside a jumptable (with jp (hl), jp (ix), or jp (iy)) if MDL cannot identify it automatically (default: mdl:jumptable).- -out-opcase <case>: whether to convert the assembler operators to upper or lower case. Possible values are: none/lower/upper (none does no conversion). Default is 'lower'.
  • -out-allow-ds-virtual: allows 'ds virtual' in the generated assembler (not all assemblers support this, but simplifies output)
  • -out-colonless-equs: equs will look like 'label equ value' instead of 'label: equ value'
  • -out-remove-safety-equdollar: labels preceding an equ statement are rendered as 'label: equ $' by default for safety (some assemblers interpret them differently otherwise). Use this flag to deactivate this behavior.
  • -out-labels-no-dots: local labels get resolved to `context.label', some assemblers do not like '.' in labels however. This flag replaces them by underscores.
  • -out-squarebracket-ind: use [] for indirections in the output, rather than ().
  • -out-data-instead-of-ds: will replace statements like ds 4, 0 by db 0, 0, 0, 0.
  • -out-do-not-evaluate-dialect-functions: some assembler dialects define functions like random/sin/cos that can be used to form expressions. By default, MDL replaces them by the result of their execution before generating assembler output (as those might not be defined in other assemblers, and thus this keeps the assembler output as compatible as possible). Use this flag if you don't want this to happen.
  • -out-evaluate-all-expressions: this flag makes MDL resolve all expressions down to their ultimate numeric or string value when generating assembler code.
  • -safety-labels-for-jumps-to-constants: makes MDL replace the destination of a jump/call to a constant (e.g. jp #3c4a) by a label. MDL does not do this by default since calls to constants are often used for BIOS calls (although replacing those constants by labels is recommended). Jumpts to constants are unsafe for optimization as the code at the target address (#3c4a in the example) might move as a result of optimization. Hence, it's safer to add a safety label at the target address and use it for the jump.
  • -quirk-sjasm-struc: allows having the keyword struc after the definition of a struct in sjasm (as in STRUCT mystruct struc), since sjasm allows this (probably by accident), and some codebases have it.
  • -quirk-sjasmplus-dirbol-double-directive: allows two directives in the same line without any separator, like this: db 0,0,0 dw 0 (this is not intended, and will be fixed in future versions of sjasmplus, but some codebases use it).
  • -do-not-allow-calls-to-nondefined-symbols: some times you want to optimize part of a codebase, and hence some symbols might be undefined, so, MDL tends to allow those. but if you want to be strict about that, and cancel further analysis of a file when one sych symbol is found, set this flag.
  • -no-flow-analysis: MDL by default tries to analyze the execution flow of the program to identify all the places where a function is called, all the places a ret statement can return to, etc. But it does not allways get it right. If this causes problems, you can disable it with this flag. As a consequence, MDL will assume that all registers are used after a ret, since it will not know where execution will continue.
  • -da data/code/<input hints>: disassembles the input binary. If this flag is used, the input file is interpreted as a binary file. The argument of this flag can be either data (indicating that the binary file is to be interpreted as data), code (indicating that the binary file is to be interpreted as code), or a path to an <input hints> file, which is a text file that gives hints to MDL about what is code and what is data. The <input hints> format is as follows. Each line can be one of (you can comment lines our by prefixing them with ';'):
    • org <address>
    • label <address> <label>
    • comment <address> <comment>
    • comment-before <address> <comment>
    • data <address>
    • code <address>
    • space <address>
  • -so: Runs the search-based-based optimizer (if the input file is an assembler file (.asm/.z80/.a80), it'll try to optimize it; if the input file is a specification file (.txt), it will use as a target for program generation; which of the two will be auto-detected based on the file extension). You can pass an optional parameter: -so size, -so speed, -so ops or -so ops-safe (default), to tell the optimizer to optimize for program size, execution speed, number of instructions or number of instructions but ensuring at least size or speed is improved (default, as this is the computationally cheapest mode, although it might not obtain the best results). This will overwrite whatever is specified in the specification file.
  • -so-gen: Like above, but instead of autodetecting, it always assumes the input file is a specification file for program generation.
  • -so-opt: Like above, but instead of autodetecting, it always assumes the input file is an assembler file for optimization.
  • -so-maxops <n>: (only for program generation) Sets the upper limit of how many CPU ops the resulting program can have.
  • -so-maxsize <n>: (only for program generation) Sets the maximum number of bytes the resulting program can occupy.
  • -so-maxtime <n>: (only for program generation) Sets the maximum time (in whichever units the target CPU uses) that the resulting program can take to execute.
  • -so-threads <n>: Sets the number of threads to use during search (default value is the number of cores of the CPU).
  • -so-checks <n>: Sets the number of random solution checks to consider a solution valid (default is 10000). Higher means more safety, but slower. If this is too low, the optimizer might generate wrong code by chance.
  • -so-blocksize <n>: (only for existing assembler optimization) Blocks of this number of instructions will be taken one at a time and optimized (default is 2).
  • -so-file <name>: (only for existing assembler optimization) limits optimizations to a particular file (this is useful, since this is a slow optimizer, and we might want to target optimizing just one part of the code). This flag can be repeated to specify several files.
  • -so-stop-after <n>: Stops optimizing after n optimizations. This is useful for debugging, if there is any optimization that breaks the code, to help locate it.
  • -ro: runs the code reoganizer optimizer.
  • -ro-no-inliner: deactivates the function inliner.
  • -ro-no-merger: deactivates the block merger.
  • -rohtml <file>: generates a visualization of the division of the code before code reoganizer optimization as an html file.
  • -po: Runs the pattern-based optimizer. You can pass an optional parameter, like ````-po sizeor-po speed```, which are shortcuts for '-po -popatterns data/pbo-patterns-size.txt' and '-po -popatterns data/pbo-patterns-speed.txt' (some dialects might change the defaults of these two)
  • -po1/-po2/-po3: The same as -po, but specify whether to do 1, 2 or 3 passes of optimization (-po is equivalent to -po2). The more passes, the slower the optimization. Usually 1 pass is enough, but often 2 passes finds a few additional optimizations. 3 passes rarely finds any additional optimization.
  • -posilent: Supresses the pattern-based-optimizer output
  • -popotential: Reports lines where a potential optimization was not applied for safety, but could maybe be done manually (at most one potential optimization per line is shown).
  • -popotential-all: Same as above, but without the one-per-line constraint.
  • -popatterns <file>: specifies the file to load optimization patterns from (default 'data/pbo-patterns.txt', which contains patterns that optimize both size and speed). For targetting size optimizations, use 'data/pbo-patterns-size.txt'. Notice that some dialects might change the default, for example, the sdcc dialect sets the default to 'data/pbo-patterns-sdcc-speed.txt'
  • -po-ldo: some pattern-based optimizations depend on the specific value that some labels take ('label-dependent optimizations', ldo). These might be dangerous for code that is still in development. This flag prevents those from being generated by MDL.
  • -po-stop-after <n>: Stops optimizing after n optimizations. This is useful for debugging, if there is any optimization that breaks the code, to help locate it.
  • -do: Runs the data optimizer (only provides potential ideas for space saving).
  • -do-minsavings <min>: sets the minimum number of potential bytes that should be saved in order for the data optimizer to generate an optimization suggestion (default value is 4).- -dot <output file>: generates a dot file with a graph representing the whole source code with one vertex per source file. Convert it to a png using 'dot' like this: dot -Tpng <output file>.dot -o <output file>.png
  • -dot-cg <output file>: generates a dot file with the call graph of the whole code base. MDL will try to identify individual functions in the code, but some might be missed.
  • -dot-cg-files <output file>: generates a dot file with the call graph of the whole code base but at a 'file' granularity, i.e., each vertex is a file, and edges represent that some code from a given file calls/jumps to the other file.
  • -dot-exclude-file <file>: excludes a given source file from analysis when generating dot files.
  • -st <output file>: to output the symbol table.
  • -st-constants: includes constants, in addition to labels, in the output symbol table.
  • -st-sjasm: generates the symbol table like the symbol section of the sjasm .lst format. This is useful to load symbols in emulators, like Emulicious, that do not support standard symbol table files.
  • -sft <output file>: generates a tsv file with some statistics about the source files (bytes used, accumulated time of all the CPU ops in the file, etc.).
  • -sft-functions: MDL will try to identify individual functions in the code, and add per-function statistics to the file generated with the -sft flag.
  • -asm <output file>: saves the resulting assembler code in a single asm file (if no optimizations are performed, then this will just output the same code read as input (but with all macros and include statements expanded). Use auto as the output file name to respect the filenames specified in the sourcefiles of some dialects, or to auto generate an output name.
  • -asm-dialect <output file>: same as '-asm', but tries to mimic the syntax of the defined dialect in the output (experimental feature, not fully implemented!). Use auto as the output file name to respect the filenames specified in the sourcefiles of some dialects, or to auto generate an output name.
  • -asm-expand-incbin: replaces all incbin commands with their actual data in the output assembler file, effectively, making the output assembler file self-contained.
  • -asm+ <output file>: generates a single text file containing the original assembler code (with macros expanded), that includes size and time annotations at the beginning of each file to help with manual optimizations beyond what MDL already provides.
  • -asm+:html <output file>: acts like -asm+, except that the output is in html (rendered as a table), allowing it to have some extra information. It also recognizes certain tags in the source code to add html visualizations of the graphics in the game, extracting them automatically from the data in the assembler files. Specifically:
    • If you add a comment like this ; mdl-asm+:html:gfx(bitmap,pre,1,8,2), it will interpret the bytes prior to this as a bitmap and render it visually in the html. pre means that the data is before the comment (use post to use the data that comes after the comment. bitmap means that the data will be interpreted as a bitmap (black/white with one bit per pixel). You can use and-or-bitmap-with-size to interpret it as the usual ZX spectrum graphics where each two bytes represent 8 pixels (first is and-mask, second is or-mask). The first two bytes will be interpreted as the height/width (hence, this can only be used with post). When specifying bitmap, the next two parameters are the width (in bytes)/height (in pixels). The last parameter is the zoom factor to use when visualizing them in the html.
    • A comment like mdl-asm+:html:bgcolor("#ffaaaa") will change the background in the HTML to the specified color from this point on.
    • A comment like mdl-asm+:html:bgcolor() will clear the HTML background color.
  • -asm+:no-reindent: tries to respect the original indentation of the source assembler file (this is not always possible, as MDL might modify or generate code, making this hard; this is why this is not on by default).
  • -asm+:no-label-links: by default, labels used in expressions are rendered as links that point to the label definitions. Use this flag to deactivate such behavior if desired.
  • -bin <output file>: generates an assembled binary. Use auto as the output file name to respect the filenames specified in the sourcefiles of some dialects, or to autogenerate an output name.
  • -tap <execution start address> <program name> <filename>: generates a .tap file, as expected by ZX spectrum emulators. <execution start address> is the entry point of the program. It can be any expression MDL recognizes in source code, e.g., a constant like #a600, a label, like CodeStart, or an expression like myLabel+10. <program name> is the name you want to be displayed when the program loads, e.g. MYGAME (only the first 10 characters will be displayed).
  • -tap-loading-screen <filename>: adds a loading screen to the .tap file (it only has an effect if the -tap flag was specified). <filename> is the name of a 6912 bytes binary file with the loading screen data.
  • -e:s <address-start> <steps>: executes the source code starting at (address can be number or a label name) for CPU time units, and displays the changed registers, memory and timing.
  • -e:u <address-start> <address-end>: executes the source code starting at until reaching , and displays the changed registers, memory and timing.
  • -e:trace: turns on step-by-step execution logging for -e:s or -e:u flags.
  • -e:track-function <address>: tracks execution count and time of a function at the specified address (can be a label).
  • -e:track-all-functions: tracks execution count and time of all functions in the code (auto detected by looking at all call instructions).
  • -e:ignore <address>: if during execution, this address is reached, an automatic ret will be executed, to return. This is useful to ignore BIOS/firmware calls that might not be defined in the codebase.
  • -e:st <address>: even if execution will start at <address-start> as specified in the above flags, function execution time will only be tracked starting at this label (useful if there is some initialization code we do not want to track).
  • -e:tree: reports the result as an execution tree.
  • -e:tree:n: reports the result as an execution tree, but only showing n levels, e.g. -e:tree:1.
  • -e:hs: reports execution hotspots (lines of code that take the most execution time overall). By default, it shows the top 20, use -e:hs:n to show the top n instead.
  • -e:watch <watch-key>: every time an instruction that has a comment annotated with the tag <watch-key>, the tollowing comma separated expressions will be evaluated and printed (after instruction execution). For example, if you have an instruction like ld a, 1 ; mdl-watch: "hello", a, you can pass -e:watch mdl-watch: and after that instruction is executed, hello, 1 will be printed. Think of this as having the chance of adding print statements throughout the code. You can specify this argument several times, to print watch statements with different keys.
  • -e:stop-on-protected-write: stop as soon as an instruction tries to write into a memory protected address (i.e., the pages of memory that are not RAM, but part of the binary we are executing). By default, only warnings are issued, as this might be ok, if we have self-modifying code.
  • -e:report-useless: tracks and reports instructions that had no visible effect in the execution (nops are ignored).
  • -e:mapper-config <filename>: if the binary to be executed requires some sort of memory mapper, it can be specified in a configuration text file. The file contains on config option per line, and should include the following options: binary_size: <size in bytes, multiple of page_size>, page_size: <page size in bytes, default is 16384>, ram_mapper_type: , rom_mapper_type: (only 'no_mapper', and 'msx_ascii16_mapper' are currently supported), initial_mapping: source1:segment1, source2:segment2, ... (one pair per each page in RAM, and where source == 0 means RAM, and source == 1 means binary, and segment is the segment within each source). Notice that when this option is specified, the binary is assumed to be loaded into a separate ROM (separate from RAM), and that the mapper will be used to let the z80 access the binary data. If this option is not specified, the binary will just be loaded in RAM.

How to use MDL

Integrating it into an IDE

The most commonly expected use of MDL is to integrate it into your text editor (vim, Subline Text, VSCode, etc.). We currently provide three examples of how to integrate it into vim, Sublime and VSCode, but if you want to integrate it into another editor/IDE and do not know how, please do let me know!:

Optimizing Assembler

Alternatively, you can ask MDL to directly generate optimized code Imagine you have a Z80 assembler project (with main file main.asm), you can just do this:

java -jar mdl.jar main.asm -po -asm main-optimized.asm

The first parameter specifies the input assembler file. -po tells MDL to run the "pattern-based optimizer", and -asm specifies the output file to where you want to save the optimized assembler code.

MDL's optimizer doesn't know anything about macros, include statements, and other fancy syntax that is usually included in assembler files. So, MDL's pre-processor loads the assembler files, and runs a pre-processor to resolve all macros before running the optimizer. Thus, the generated code will not contain any macros, as those will all be expanded. Therefore, if you call MDL without -po it will not run the optimizer, it will just spit out the same assembler code it loaded as input (but with all the macros expanded).

If you just want to run the optimizer, tell you the potential optimizations but not save any optimized code, you can just call MDL like this:

java -jar mdl.jar main.asm -po

This will just output to the terminal all the suggested optimizations, and you can choose which ones to do manually.

Other MDL Functionalities

MDL includes several other functionalities, aimed at helping optimizing Z80 assembler code. For example, it can generate "annotated assembler" to help you see how much space each assembler statement uses and make decisions about how to optimize. You can generate this annotated assembler output by calling MDL like this:

java -jar mdl.jar main.asm -asm+ main-annotated.txt

or

java -jar mdl.jar main.asm -asm+:html main-annotated.html

Of course you could also add a -po or -ro there, if you want to optimize the code before annotating it.

MDL can also generate tables with how much space each of your assembler files uses (if you include many files from a main assembler file, MDL will analyze all of them), and can even generate a little visual reprsentation of your code (saved as a standard .dot file that can then be turned into a pdf or png image to view it using the dot tool).
