PHP 5.6 is installed by default on the free version

As mentioned on another issue on Scotch Box Pro, Scotch Box (both Free and Pro) have not received updates in several years and are relying on old versions of Ubuntu and other software such as PHP 5.6 that are no longer supported. Scotch.io has announced that they are closing shop in Jan 2022, so further updates are unlikely.

Anyone still looking to use Scotch Box but hoping for a newer version of PHP or other software here or in the Pro version will run into trouble due to unsupported software update channels. However, if you feel like rolling your own version of Scotch Box, there are decent instructions for doing that in the pro docs. They work fairly well if you switch the builder box to bento's 20.04 build, but there are some hangups around mailhog and go. I've gone through these steps recently for an old project.

@gsolak & @DavidGinzberg - Nick has abandoned this product, I'd like to direct you to my variation called Cognac box which is a much more current version based on supported versions of Ubuntu, PHP and Vagrant. You can find at: https://github.com/reddingwebpro/cognacbox
