Pressing [ctrl] + [o] should open up a channel dialog box.
You can also type a character name here to initiate a private message channel to him.

You don't have to click on "Open" to initiate the action. In the previous sample I wrote the name and pressed [enter] to open a private channel to the playter.

Alternatively, in the list, you can double click a channel name to open it:
