nedragrevev's English Subtitles

This repository contains all the SSA English subtitles I've worked on or fixed to match the most common anime home releases. It may be slowly updated with more anime if I manage to find the time needed to do this.

What's the point of these? What's wrong with already available fansubs or the official BD subs?

Official subs flash in and out which is distracting. They don't typeset. Translation quality is usually quite good, but can be hit and miss. The majority of fansubs I've come across don't time well (or inconsistently for no apparent reason), and songs generally don't have karaoke effects added. Typesetting quality can vary, but since most fansubs are on a release schedule, there's usually always room for improvement. Translation quality varies. To be fair, I've not come across many fansubs as I'm just subbing my own collection of BD's.

Since I own all the BD/DVD releases of these animes and encode them myself, most of these are all suited for western BD releases and should sync up well, though I guess that does depend on how you extract or encode your BD's.

My goals:

  • Timing: All lines manually timed (or checked and adjusted) with thought to presentation quality.
  • Typesetting: Realistic. Enough said.
  • Songs: Appropriate karaoke effects where it works. Translation adjustments so the lyrics actually make sense (and still reflect the JP).
  • Translation: Honorifics preferred. Sensible unlocalized translations preferred (with the rare TN if required), but a second localized version will usually be included. Interjections added back in if it looks better. No swear words while trying to still convey the emotions (and charateristics) of the speaker. As for the translation itself, I almost always makes some minor adjustments but I'll avoid translating as much as possible as this is what's most exhausting. Though if I think it's needed, and it's not 20+ episodes (or typeset heavy), I'll check and retranslate every line.
  • Dialog: Cabin SemiBold @ font size 68.

These releases include signs and songs only versions if the BD's I own have English dubs. Some have been adjusted to suit the differences if it was a quick job (for example, VE's English dub had a few extra insert songs not present in the JP dub), but most are simply versions where the lines for dialog have been removed.

How to use these files

Use MKVToolNix's "Multiplexer" tab to combine/mux your encode with the relevant ".ass" sub file/s (required), all fonts (required), chapter xml if applicable, and cover.jpg if desired. Once started, the muxing process is as fast as your HDD, so in some cases it will only take a second or two.
