Public repository for hosting the research outputs of the Mapping Career Causeways project.

Nesta is mapping viable pathways to fulfilling new occupations for people whose jobs are likely to change or be lost as a result of automation. We are calling these ‘career causeways’.

In this repository, you will find the research outputs of the report Mapping Career Causeways: Supporting workers at risk and open-source code for generating career transition recommendations.

The project is part of Nesta's Open Jobs programme, and supported by the J.P.Morgan as part of the New Skills At Work initiative.

The supplementary data consists of several folders corresponding to the different parts of the Mapping Career Causeways project report:

Installation

It is possible to browse and download the supplementary online data, or try out cloud-based tutorials for exploring career transition recommendations, without installing anything on your local machine. If you'd like to run any of the analysis code on your local machine, please follow the steps below.

Clone and set up the repo

To clone the repo and install the dependencies, navigate to a convenient directory and run the following commands from the terminal:

$ git clone https://github.com/nestauk/mapping-career-causeways
$ cd mapping-career-causeways

It should be possible to set up the environment using the specified configuration file

$ conda env create -f conda_environment.yaml

You should then activate the newly created conda environment and install the repository package:

$ conda activate mapping_career_causeways
$ pip install -e .

Download input data

As the final step, you'll have to download the input data necessary to run the analysis and inspect the career transitions. This can be easily done by running the following command in the terminal, which will synchronise your local data directory with the copy on our S3 cloud storage:

make sync_data_from_s3

This will set up the required input files into the data/raw, data/interim and data/processed folders (except for very large intermediate analysis outputs that can be downloaded manually if needed).

In case you run into some issues with the AWS command line interface, you might alternatively try the commands below. This will download and unzip an archived version of the input data. However, this archive might not always be up to date and, therefore, we recommend using the first approach.

$ cd codebase/data
$ python download_data.py
