Hi Greg,
Comments as requested on -discuss:

  1. Overall, I think it makes good sense, and works as it is. I think it works well to set out how the two approaches came about, and adopts a realistic approach to the cultural problems. The comments below are minor.
  2. " This is by far the easiest way to create simple things like letters, but it is rigid and opaque, has poor support for laying out equations": Depending on one's field, and how complex and numerous one's equations are likely to be, I'm not sure that it's fair to say that Word has poor support any more. It improved dramatically around version 2010, even allowing one to type a subset of LaTeX syntax to enter them quite quickly. I'm sure it's still substandard for somebody doing very mathematical work, but it's perfectly adequate for many who just have the occasional bit of maths.
  3. Another disadvantage of Google Docs and the like is that editing is limited (or impossible? not sure) without a good internet connection - e.g. when travelling.

Hope that helps.
