Are you a great software engineer? Can you...

  • Glance at any system;
  • Know how to build it another, possibly better, way;
  • Understand the cost/benefits of changing from the current to the alternate;
  • Say when its worth to apply (a)tiny patches or (b)dynamite to the current project (or (c)do nothing at all);

This class aims to make you into a great software engineer. Software Engineering is the process of the design, construction and maintenance of good enough software, given the available resources. SE is an experimental discipline where engineers are always testing trade offs between what they want and what they need and what they've got. It is easy to check if you are working with such an engineer: just ask them to make and justify well-informed decisions about trade-offs in software engineering.
