Command-Line Utilities

CMD Cheat Sheet (Basics - level 1)

Some essential command-line utilities and their descriptions:

  • dir (Windows Command Prompt) / ls (Linux/Unix Shell): Used to list files and directories in the current location.

  • mkdir (Windows Command Prompt) / mkdir (Linux/Unix Shell): Creates a new directory.

  • cd (Windows Command Prompt) / cd (Linux/Unix Shell): Changes the current directory.

  • rmdir (Windows Command Prompt) / rm (Linux/Unix Shell): Removes directories (and files in Linux/Unix).

  • cls (Windows Command Prompt) / clear (Linux/Unix Shell): Clears the terminal screen.

  • copy or cp (Windows Command Prompt) / cp (Linux/Unix Shell): Copies files from one location to another.

  • move or mv (Windows Command Prompt) / mv (Linux/Unix Shell): Moves files or directories to a different location.

  • echo (Windows Command Prompt) / echo (Linux/Unix Shell): Displays messages or controls command output in scripts.

  • cat / less (Linux/Unix Shell) / type (Windows Command Prompt): Display the contents of files.
