Mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs), found at depths of 30-150 meters, have been seen as a potential refuge for shallow-water organisms. However, recent studies suggest that this role varies depending on the situation. In this study, we examined a unique habitat at the upper mesophotic depth (30 meters) in Xiaoliuqiu, Taiwan, and tracked the changes in the coral community one year after a heatwave hit the reef. In this habitat, we found many branching corals that thrive in deeper waters, living on a sandy-rubble bottom with dense turf algae. In 2022, 63.6% of these corals were bleached due to severe heat stress affecting the shallow reefs. The most affected coral species, Acropora tenella, had only 9.7% of its population remain healthy. A year later, there was a significant shift in the dominant coral species from A. tenella to Anacropora spp., although the overall coral cover did not change much. We believe this rapid shift happened because Anacropora spp. benefited from the dense canopy provided by A. tenella. Our findings suggest that the composition of understory organisms, such as Anacropora spp., may play a key role in how some reefs recover from disturbances. The characteristics of this habitat, dominated by deep-water specialists, and its vulnerability to stressors indicate that it is unlikely to serve as a refuge for most shallow-water species. This study highlights that MCEs are not universally effective as refuges and underscores the need to include these unique habitats in conservation efforts and to better understand their functions before they are lost.
