I think that the annotations to control which technique to use is broken at the method level

Just a hunch, but I think with the umpteen iterations of things that I did while I was building it to this state, I broke the method level annotation support, and I don't have adequate tests to validate it.

This is a note to check it and to fix it if I am right.
