I don't know if there's an easy way to fix this, but I'm getting a lot of 404s for users who don't have gravatars:

Any idea what we could do to fix this?

I don't really like all those 404s either, but that's how initials currently work. See the comments on these issues/PRs for more explanation: #20, #24, #25

It's really annoying since it stops us seeing useful messages. However, there's absolutely no way to stop it from happening, since the only way to test for a Gravatar is to try to load it.
