To replace Goerli by end of this year, we proposed to launch Holesky to launch not later than September.

To start working to a final genesis configuration and state, I recommend to have a first breakout call next week.

  • Thursday, June 15, 2023, 12:30 UTC

Agenda

  • Confirm timeline (genesis, config freeze, etc.)
  • Work out the desired genesis validator set
  • If time permitting, discuss strategies for initial genesis allocation (or mass seeding of developer/staker accounts)

We would like to invite representatives of the client teams to discuss and other testnet enthusiasts, e.g. ethstaker, ephemery. Feel free to add more items to the agenda if necessary.

Can't make the call this morning, please keep us posted as to how we can contribute / be a part of this.

I won't be able to attend the call, but have made this planning document with some discussion points: https://notes.ethereum.org/@parithosh/holsky-planning

Key takeaways:

  • genesis validator set size should be realistically close to 1.4-1.5 million validators
    • question to client teams: do we expect issues with such a large validator set?
    • recommend validator-set size per client team is 80-100k
  • rough timeline:
    • Jun/29: call to get hard commitments for genesis validators by team; please submit your commitment below:
    • Jul/20: have another alignment call if necessary
    • Jul/Aug: private testing of the genesis with various clients
    • Aug/17: final genesis state and config release (no more changes beyond this point)
    • Sep/15: genesis event
    • Oct/1: decision to either announce the new testnet or to consider a regenesis in case we don't get finality
  • other items:
    • consider conducting 200k exits right after genesis to get a more interesting consensus state
    • majority of validators should be of type-0 withdrawal credentials
    • genesis version is capella/shanghai
