Q: When will POD5 be default format written by ONT Sequencing Devices?

Is there a roadmap when POD5 will be natively written by MinKNOW?
If it writes POD5, does it write many files (as for fast5) or will there be just a bunch of files or even a single POD5 file in the end?

Any info on that?

Hi @sklages ,

I believe as of MinKnow 5.4 a user can select POD5 as the output format and a switch to POD5 being the default format may happen in a release this year.

The number of POD5 files written by MinKnow is currently the same as for FAST5, with ~4k reads per file. There will be a change to increase the number of reads per POD5 file to reduce the number of POD5 files to better utilise the file format.

Eventually, I expect that MinKnow will settle on a configuration where there will be a few 10's of POD5 files for a full run to balance performance, reliability, user experience etc.
